Heritage Piglets at TK Ranch

Three week old piglets enjoying a fall
day on TK Ranch

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving dinner last weekend. We had 14 for supper, which is not unusual around here — luckily after years of cooking for crowds I can almost do it in my sleep — and with our work schedule lately that's the reality around here. Winter is right around the corner and we want to make sure we are well prepared before the snow flies. While many people thought the summer was wet, here we actually had a minor drought — and our hay suffered. So we have spent the better part of the last 12 weeks trying to track down unsprayed hay and luckily we have been very successful, in fact most of what we bought came from an organic farmer near Viking and our neighbours. So we are getting close to having our winter feed hauled home and ready for the cold weather to hit — hopefully in January :).

Grassfed Cattle at TK Ranch

Seeing our cattle rubbing on the large stones that dot the prairie here makes me think of what it must have been like when the bison roamed these same pastures over a century ago. TK Ranch encompasses some of the most endangered prairie in Alberta — the Northern Fescue Grasslands. There are only 4% of this type of wild grasslands left in the world and we have over 8400 acres here. It is not uncommon to find ancient tee-pee rings and bison trails when we gather cattle or go for a walk — not to mention many of the species at risk for the prairie region like Ferruginous Hawks, Loggerhead Shrikes, Sprague's Pipits or Sharp-Tailed Grouse.
