Horses play and important role on TK Ranch. The native prairie that we live on is not flat like many believe — ancient bison herds made sure of that. Imagine millions of buffalo migrating across vast open grasslands. Like cattle, the way bison controlled insects — like flies and mosquitoes — was to dig and throw dirt onto their backs leaving large "bull holes" in the landscape. Add these to rubbing stones, ancient trails and tee-pee rings and the past comes to life. While these holes are now grown in with prairie grasses, they are still very evident and make driving across the pasture challenging. Horses make checking and working with our livestock much easier. Developing relationships with these very intelligent animals takes a lot of time and patience, but once they have gained your trust there is not a better friend. Above (top) is Blinx, Ginny stands watch over a calf and Rosie (left) carries our daughter Maria tagging calves.
