The Act of Being Mindful

TK Ranch at Instagram

When I moved to our land near Calgary last March to manage the construction of our new facility, I didn't anticipate how disconnected I would become. After living for 27 years surrounded by thousands of acres of wild prairie, I had learned to feel the heartbeat of the land. The natural ebb and flow of life and death had intertwined over time and a respectful connection had grown. One that acknowledged the give and take of living and how my actions directly affected the world around me. Whether I was feeding my hens, digging potatoes, dealing with customers or organizing the slaughter of our livestock, I ensured my gratitude was always present.

In our fast paced lives it is easy to slip into daily routines that are disconnected from the natural world. I went home to TK Ranch over Christmas and quickly realized how my behaviour had changed over the past 6 months. Instead of greeting each day with an open heart and an appreciation for the world around me, I had slipped into a fog of work and stress. I had stopped paying attention to the little things that kept me connected with the land, like watching the sunrise or listening to the birds. I worked long hours and started buying pre-packaged foods and ignored how they were produced because I was tired. It was just easier not to think about it. My actions were no longer mindful because I was too pre-occupied with my daily life.

Going home gave me the attitude check I needed to become mindful again. I've stopped taking for granted the ease that convenience brings and have started making conscious decisions again. About the things I buy, how I interact with others and about being grateful for all the world offers — even when it's not easy.
