Owning and tending livestock in a northern climate makes for long days spent outside in the cold. Our priority during the winter months is ensuring our animals have plenty of shelter from the wind, ample feed so they can stay warm and maintain body condition, fresh water, and lots of space to allow for free movement.

We have a great team of people on TK Ranch that brave the cold to feed, water and monitor the health of our animals — and it is minus 42C there this morning with the windchill. My husband Dylan Biggs manages all aspects of livestock production from birth to slaughter and oversees our stringent animal welfare program.¬†Our oldest daughter Jocelyn, who many of you know from previous deliveries, works with her fiancé Andre Voortman to manage our outdoor pigs and laying hens. Our daughter Julia helps with tending our cattle and sheep and is always quick to help; last night she braved 60 km winds and a ground blizzard to move our herd of horses to shelter. Dexter Dedora, seen above sorting our ewes for breeding, joined our team 14 months ago with his wife Kayla and their three small children. Dexter not only helps tend our livestock, he is a key person involved with our slaughter facility. His kind and conscientious demeanour ensures respect is always top of mind during the slaughter process. Glen Randle also joined our team in 2015 to help manage our cattle. With over 45 years of livestock experience, he is a real asset to our program. Glen's favourite people are horses, which is very typical of real cattlemen, and his sense of humour and old cowhand stories often start our days with a smile.¬†Regardless of severe weather conditions these people can be found outside thawing frozen waterers, searching for lost livestock, repairing broken equipment, building shelter and hauling feed to ensure our animals are well cared for. Their commitment is the foundation of TK Ranch.
