Staying focused on the path you are taking is important if you want to achieve your goals. For over two decades we have been working diligently to create a vertically integrated business model that would allow us to care for our animals from birth to slaughter to consumer while stewarding our land sustainably. As I have mentioned before, this has been a difficult path because like our pioneer ancestors we were breaking trail.

When we started our branded meat business in 1995, everyone around us thought we were crazy and doomed for failure. Today many in the livestock industry still think we are misguided, that we are pandering to a bunch of "uneducated consumers" and we should stop because it's making them feel uncomfortable. Our goal is to provide our customers with products that they want and appreciate, yet this common sense business strategy is dismissed by many livestock producers as bunk. I still scratch my head because what we are doing is good for the livestock industry. We are creating an alternative market where we have control over what we are paid for our animals and this is almost unheard of in conventional agriculture. Big business dictates what farm and ranch families are paid for their livestock and for this reason most can't make a living on the farm. Luckily change is happening — people in our small town no longer cross the street when they see me (true story); instead they want to chat about what we are doing and are excited about new opportunities in agriculture. Most of this change is happening because you, the consumer, are voting with your dollars. Every time you eat you are casting a vote for the food products you want to support. So the next time you sit down for a meal which includes TK Ranch products, you are breaking trail with us on a path towards a brighter future.
