After thoroughly researching almost every animal welfare certification in North America, we chose Animal Welfare Approved (AWA). This was the only birth-to-slaughter strictly pasture-based program that aligned with our values. Unlike other animal welfare certifications that still allow the factory feeding of livestock, this is not allowed under the AWA standards. All animals must be born, fed and finished in a pasture setting and only slaughtered in AWA approved facilities.

The AWA is pragmatic but thorough; during our first inspection they measured every one of our movable outdoor pens to ensure we met the standards, and inspected all of our livestock for proof of animal health and welfare. They asked us for our individual animal records, water and soil samples, pasture rotation records, emergency evacuation plans, biohazards prevention and a long list of other required management protocols. We were very pleased with their level of professionalism, commitment to animal welfare, understanding of the livestock industry as a whole and most of all their transparency. They are the most stringent animal wefare program in North America and most others pale in comparison. I suggest taking a look at their website as it has lots of valuable information that every consumer should know about farm animal welfare.
