Stretching My Brain

DDOS sign

Discussing relevant topics that are in the media like the use of GMOs, antibiotic resistant bugs, chemical residues in our food and many others is an important part of what we do. By understanding these important issues consumers can make informed decisions to benefit the food system as a whole.

Unfortunately some people in agriculture feel that these issues should not be discussed publicly, especially in social media, because the average consumer is not educated enough to understand them. While this might be true about some things, I have found that our customers are very well-read overall and appreciate any information we can provide.

Recently I did a Facebook post about the CFIA finding glyphosate (Round-Up) in food products. The backlash from mainstream agriculture was quick and I was labeled an “anti-science” fear monger pandering to the masses that think “the sky is falling”. This is not the first time, and likely not the last, that I have been attacked for standing up for what I believe in, so water off a duck’s back. But it’s what happened after this latest backlash that took things to another level.

Soon after I posted the article about glyphosate, our website experienced several orchestrated DDOS attacks. If you don’t know what this is, it’s an acronym for "distributed denial of service." When someone out there doesn’t like you, or likes you way too much, they bombard your website with hits until it crashes. While I would like to think this was because we are popular, I fear this is not the case. By being outspoken advocates for change, we are on the radar of companies who supply corporate agriculture with a multitude of products that potentially have a lot to lose. Maybe I am just paranoid and these were random attacks; unfortunately we will never know. Regardless, I have been stretching my brain the last couple of weeks learning how to defend ourselves better and have implemented effective strategies to hopefully fend off future attacks. People say exercising your mind will keep you young, but at this rate I’m headed for the diaper aisle.
