Happy 150th Birthday Canada!

Old Hudson Bay Post and Parliament Building, Edmonton, Alberta

When my mother Leila Lambert and father Dennis Nelson were married in 1957 they both had long family histories dating back centuries in Canada. My mother’s ancestor Eustache Lambert came from France in 1644 and established the first eel fishery across from Quebec City on the St. Lawrence River. His family spread across Canada and in 1864 Cyrille Lambert was married in St. Albert and homesteaded in the Picardville area. Some of my father’s family originally came from England on the Mayflower then traveled north to Canada where they eventually settled in the eastern townships of Quebec. Many of our Irish ancestors settled in the same region where they established the town of Luskville. My great-great grandfather Simpson Davis enlisted to fight in the Northwest (Riel) Rebellion and after being released from military service traveled west where he settled near Carstairs. He then moved his family north to Halfway Lake (east of Westlock) where they had a stopping house on the Athabasca Landing Trail. Other relatives from Sweden and Germany also settled in this area in the late 1800s making my family patchwork complete. I grew up listening to pioneer stories that brought the history of Canada to life. From voyageurs to the wild-west to residential schools, my family experienced it all. I am a proud Canadian and my heritage represents the true multi-cultural melting pot of this nation. Happy Birthday Canada!
