It takes a lot of loving care and time to raise our grass-finished cattle, more than double compared to most conventionally raised animals. During the winter we rely on harvested feed like hay to keep our cattle happy and content. On a normal year we can grow most of our own feed, but this is the third year we have hardly grown any due to drought. Usually we can afford to squeak through the winter by purchasing feed when it gets dry. But three years in a row is difficult, especially when there was an Alberta wide drought last summer which drove the price of feed through the roof. We paid almost double normal feed prices last year and coupled with the recession this has stretched our financial resources. Like many ranch families in our area we are now facing some tough decisions to get through the winter. Many families will have no choice but to sell their cows because the cost of winter feed is just too much to afford, in fact it's higher this year than last. We are in the same boat, but selling our cows is a bit different for us. It's taken us decades to select breeding stock that thrives on a grass-based diet, we just can't go to the auction market and replace them when the drought ends. A set of cows like this is almost irreplaceable. To see them sold would be heartbreaking, a life's work gone. Not to mention how this could affect our business going forward. If you can afford to help us buy feed for our cows this winter it would be very appreciated. Thank you!
